The Gas-Powered Steam Train - English Electric GT3

Hello Everyone! :D

This week, we look back at another obscure prototype from the early British Railways era, that being the English Electric Gas Turbine 3 or GT3, a machine that, despite looking like a boxy steam locomotive, had many endearing qualities that made it an exceptional performer during its incredibly short working life, being reliable and powerful in service, and comfortable and easy to handle for its engine crews.

Unfortunately, even from first glance, GT3 had many design and configuration problems that made it look less like a futuristic machine for the 1960s, and instead a carryover from the art-deco 1930s, and with the British Railways fleet rosters having been fully dominated by diesel traction from the Modernisation Plan, the only outcome for this strange but sturdy locomotive was an inauspicious career and quick withdrawal.
