History of Money, Lecture 8, Pt. B: in the High Middle Ages and during the Renaissance, Italian merchants functioned as middlemen between continental Europe and the Middle East. In Florence and Venice especially, silver and gold money increased in quantity. Merchants responded to the need for long-distance trade by inventing paper bills of exchange.
