Gunman who shot 2 NYPD cops revealed to be migrant who recently crossed into US via Eagle Pass

Early Monday, a 19-year-old Venezuelan migrant shot two police officers who attempted to stop him while he was riding a motorized scooter in Elmhurst.

The suspect, Bernardo Castro Mata, was driving the wrong way on 89th Street and 23rd Avenue around 1:40 a.m. before abandoning the scooter and fleeing on foot.

During the chase, he fired multiple rounds at the officers, injuring Officer Christopher Abreu in the leg and striking Officer Richard Yarusso in the bulletproof vest.

Yarusso then administered a tourniquet to Abreu’s leg to stop the bleeding. The officers returned fire, hitting Mata in the ankle, the New York Post reported.
