Anastasia Dalziell, the lead author of the study, stated that the male lyrebird, with its magnificence, is capable of creating an extraordinary acoustic illusion. Research suggests that male lyrebirds only exhibit this behavior during mating or when the female decides to end their courtship. The purpose of these sounds is to deceive the female into believing that there is danger elsewhere, encouraging her to stay with the male. The ability to imitate sounds is not exclusive to male lyrebirds, as female lyrebirds also possess this skill. However, as reported by The Guardian, female lyrebirds imitate sounds for various reasons, such as defense.
