The Curlew Sandpiper: Close Up HD Footage (Calidris ferruginea)
The Curlew Sandpiper, with its scientific moniker Calidris ferruginea, is a little wading bird. When breeding, it develops a rusty-brown colouring to its feathers that allows it to blend into the tundra landscape where it nests. Outside of breeding season, its plumage is predominantly grey. These birds breed in the Arctic regions of northern Russia and Alaska. After breeding finishes, they migrate unbelievable distances to wintering grounds located in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Australasia. Curlew Sandpipers forage by probing wet mud for small invertebrate prey such as insects and crustaceans. Remarkably, despite their long-distance migrations, these shorebirds have a conservation status of "Least Concern" on the IUCN Red List.
