The Principality of Monaco has a fascinating history! At his death in 1309, François Grimaldi was succeeded by his cousin, Rainier I. However, it is Charles Grimaldi, also known as Charles I, who is considered by historians to be the real founder of the Principality. He expanded its territory by adding the areas of Menton and Roquebrune, thus increasing the size of Monaco.

Honoré II, Prince of Monaco secured recognition of his independent sovereignty from Spain in 1633, and then from Louis XIII of France by the Treaty of Péronne (1641).
