Orbán Fiercely Rejects EU Conscription
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has delivered a strong rebuke against the European Union's suggestion of reinstating military conscription as part of a unified EU army. In a candid interview, Orbán emphasized that military conscription is a national matter, not one to be dictated by Brussels. He declared that "others making decisions on Hungarian blood is unacceptable," highlighting the threat to national sovereignty posed by such proposals.
Orbán's comments come amidst discussions led by the European People’s Party (EPP) to create a conscription system for a European Union army. He argued that this would strip Hungary of its control over its young citizens' fate and undermine the country's autonomy. He reassured that Hungary has no plans to reintroduce the draft, abolished three decades ago, and instead focuses on bolstering self-defense through education and training programs.
Amid the growing tensions in Europe due to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Orbán warned that Europe is inching closer to war each week. He criticized NATO's involvement and the support of Western nations for Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil, stating it brings Russian forces nearer to Hungary. Orbán outlined his view of the conflict's stages—talks, preparation, and destruction—and expressed concern that Europe is dangerously close to the final phase.
Orbán's remarks also touched on the broader implications of the Ukraine conflict, arguing that Western European countries view Ukraine and Central Europe as a buffer zone. He stressed Hungary's commitment to peace and its opposition to being dragged into a broader conflict, reiterating that NATO should focus on defense rather than engaging in conflicts outside its territory.
As Hungary prepares for the upcoming Peace March demonstration, Orbán aims to highlight the importance of peace and the threat of war. He called on European leaders to prioritize pro-peace decisions and warned against the financial and moral costs of the ongoing war. With the European parliamentary elections on the horizon, Orbán urged voters to support leaders who advocate for peace and resist the pro-war agenda.
