Monsters and other unspeakable terrors typically hide in the darkness, but in writer-director Gino McKoy's new sci-fi horror Lumina, the scariest things make their home in the light. Collider is excited to exclusively share the trailer for the upcoming film that offers a peek into the accursed trip of a group of friends and conspiracy theorists into the desert to find the infamous Area 51 and get some much-needed answers. All that awaits them, however, is a dark rabbit hole full of disturbing revelations and interstellar encounters that leave them forever changed. Starring Requiem's Rupert Lazarus as the heartbroken and determined Alex, the film is set to arrive in over 1,000 theaters across the U.S. on July 12.

Lumina is primarily about Alex, who has finally found the girl of his dreams in Tatiana (Eleanor Williams) until she suddenly vanishes in a mysterious flash of light. Stricken by grief and traumatized by the situation, he organizes his friends to help in his desperate search to discover her true fate. Taking to the desert together opens the group up to the unexpected, leaving everyone in a fight for their lives against forces they don't fully understand. Alex is still willing to risk everything against the unknown if it means finding Tatiana again.

The trailer opens with a love song and scenes between the couple that highlight their heartwarming connection until the music begins to distort. Following that calm beginning, the tension starts to ramp up as Alex and his friends are immediately greeted by the skull of what appears to be an astronaut in their helmet. While they have moments to relax and enjoy each other's company, peace is brief for the group. Their investigation descends into horror with a recurring presence being the strange light that appears out of nowhere and shines with a force that shouldn't be possible. This seems to be the key to solving Tatiana's disappearance, but the group must get past other humans guarding the facilities they sneak around, advanced laser weaponry, and hulking, fleshy beasts to find what they came for.

Who Makes Up the Cast of 'Lumina'?
In addition to Lazarus and Williams, Lumina boasts a bit of Oscar-nominated star power in the form of Eric Roberts. Known for turns in The Dark Knight and The Expendables, he was up for Best Supporting Actor for the 1985 action thriller Runaway Train and has more recently enjoyed turns in The Righteous Gemstones and Damien Chazelle's Babylon. Rounding out the cast alongside him is Warrior Nun's Andrea Tivadar, V/H/S miniseries star Sidney Nicole Rogers, and In the Cut's Ken Lawson. McKoy will also make an appearance in what will be his feature directorial debut.

This year, the iconic Belgian festival is themed around ‘LIFE,’ which serves as the prequel to the 2016 ‘Elixir of Life’ theme. This milestone edition is focused on reflecting on the past and how we have grown into today. The trailer takes viewers on a mystical journey, showcasing life through the conjunction of two moons shining their light. The glowing plants and vines add a magical touch. ‘LIFE‘ aims to transport people back to a spirited era in Silvyra. Taking a step back to admire this, all I can think of is how beautiful it is. This year is about pausing, taking it all in, and admiring what we have grown into.

Get ready for a beautiful, mystical main stage! Do we see any hints within? First off, the entire setting screams Avatar’s Pandora with lush greenery and bioluminescent flora set against a dramatic nighttime backdrop and a starry sky. About 43 seconds in we see some sort of giant rock formation (or sculpture) looking like a man sitting hunched over. Then the Pandora vibes kick in with glowing leaves and trees and connecting with roots and vines to a giant pink flower that opens. Much like Avatar, it appears that all of the flora is connected by some lifeforce running through roots. We expect the mainstage to feature this large flower in the center with plenty of bioluminescent trees, leaves, and other plants scattered throughout.

Synopsis

A terrifying sci-fi thrill ride, LUMINA follows four friends desperately searching for their abductee friend in a DUMB – DEEP UNDERGROUND MILITARY BASE. Whether they find their friend or not, what they find in the desert of the US to the sands of the Sahara, will change their lives forever.

PATRICIA, a free-spirited Nubian hippie and amateur videographer, is staying at the house of her rich friend, ALEX, who decides to throw a party that reunites old friends and introduces them to his new girl, TATIANA. The night seems destined for drama when he invites DELILAH, an old girlfriend who doesn’t hide her feelings for him. Despite the tension running through the celebration, the night goes off without a hitch.

Everything changes with the sudden appearance of blinding lights from the sky. One second they’re there, the next they’re gone, and the only thing for sure is that Tatiana has disappeared.

Months go by, during which Alex’s mental state deteriorates. He joins an online community of conspiracy theorists and UFO watchers and has even reached out to GEORGE, an old acquaintance whose beliefs demand a matching tin foil hat. Worried about him, Patricia calls Delilah. After a recent falling out Delilah has been reluctant to come by, but jumps at the opportunity to work her way back into his life.

Alex is convinced he must find Tatiana and he believes she’s in a DUMB. After an intensely vivid dream about Tatiana being held captive there. The four friends set out on a trip that changes some lives and takes others. After being hunted by alien menaces, tracked by the government, and chased by lights in the sky, they quickly realize that they have gotten themselves in too deep.

In his feature directing debut, Gino Mckoy leads a cast that includes the legendary Eric Roberts as well as up-and-coming talent Rupert Lazarus, Eleanor Williams, Andrea Tivadar, Sidney Nicole Rogers, Ken Lawson, and Emily Hall.
