Samuel Sharpe (1801-1832) was a Jamaican Baptist deacon and a key figure in the fight against slavery in Jamaica. He is best known for leading the 1831-1832 Christmas Rebellion, also known as the Baptist War, a major slave uprising. Sharpe advocated for peaceful resistance and encouraged slaves to refuse to work unless they were paid. The rebellion was violently suppressed, and Sharpe was captured and executed. His efforts and ultimate sacrifice played a significant role in the eventual abolition of slavery in Jamaica, and he is celebrated as a national hero.
