In the follow-up, players assume the role of a hired gunman tasked with tracking down and eliminating the Jackal, an arms dealer in an undisclosed African nation.

Arriving amid a civil war that is still raging, the protagonist soon learns that in order to catch the Jackal, they must play both sides of the struggle, so they take advantage of the power struggle to get closer to their target. The franchise saw a significant tempo shift with Far Cry 2, which put a strong emphasis on violent fighting and difficult moral decisions in an open environment. One of the new features was the buddy system, which allowed players to form teams with AI allies to help them out on missions.
