In an unprecedented turn of events, former President Donald Trump has been found guilty of conspiring to buy the silence of a porn actor days before the 2016 election, becoming the first former U.S. president to be convicted of a crime as he seeks a second term. The unanimous verdict in the Manhattan “hush money” case was delivered after almost two days of jury deliberation.

Speaking to the media outside the New York courthouse on May 29, 2024, Trump denounced the trial as a "disgrace", adding he would continue fighting for the county.

The trial, which lasted five weeks, saw testimony from several former Trump associates who detailed a scheme to suppress the story of an alleged extramarital encounter with Stormy Daniels. The Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg brought the case forward last year, marking a significant victory with this historic conviction.

Jurors heard evidence including invoices, cheques, bank statements, audio recordings, phone logs, text messages, and direct testimony from 22 witnesses, proving Trump went to illegal lengths to protect himself and his campaign. Trump’s defense argued there was no evidence he was aware of the scheme, criticizing the credibility of key witness Michael Cohen.

Despite the conviction, Trump remains a leading candidate in the presidential election polls, consistently ahead of President Joe Biden in crucial swing states. He is also facing three other criminal cases, none of which are likely to go to trial before November’s vote.

This landmark case underscores the complex legal and political challenges facing Trump as he continues his bid for re-election. The jury's decision has sparked a national debate about the rule of law and its implications for American democracy.
