Eddie Murphy is bringing back one of his most beloved characters.

On May 22, Netflix shared the official trailer for the upcoming fourth “Beverly Hills Cop” movie, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F."

In the clip, we see Murphy's character, Axel Foley, return to Beverly Hills for another mission after he receives a mysterious phone call from his old pal Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), who asks for his help.

"We got to do something," Foley says determined.

After that, Foley is seen wreaking havoc on the streets of Los Angeles, including damaging city property with a snowplow and driving a truck through a mansion.

The trailer comes after Netflix shared an image of the Oscar-nominated star reprising his role as Foley in the movie.

In the November 2023 pic, Murphy is seen wearing his character’s signature Detroit Lions jacket while his hands are in the air, as police officers surround him and a crowd looks on. It appears as if Murphy is in an overturned vehicle, while a Ralph Lauren store is in the distance behind him.

“He’s back. Axel Foley returns in 2024!” the streaming service captioned the snap on X.

“Beverly Hills Cop” came out in 1984. That movie along with Murphy's roles in “48 Hrs.” and “Trading Places,” helped establish him as a comedy superstar. Not to mention, he also had breakthrough work on “Saturday Night Live.”

In 1987, Murphy reprised his iconic role as Axel Foley in “Beverly Hills Cop II” and 1994’s “Beverly Hills Cop III.” A fourth film was discussed for years.

“They’ve been trying to get ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ together for 10 years, but the script has to be right,” he told TODAY’s Al Roker in 2021 while discussing the release of another long-awaited sequel of his, “Coming 2 America.”

“I told you guys, I’m not doing any more money grabs. I’m not doing any more movies that’s like, ‘He clearly just did this movie for a check.’ I’m not doing any of those.”

Murphy has also said the fourth film came together once a key figure from the first one signed on.

“Jerry Bruckheimer, the original producer, when he got involved and he started developing the script, and he knew what ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ is supposed to be — when he got back involved, that’s when it all started to come together,” he told Collider in January.

“He put all the pieces in place that were required for us to make a great movie. I’m excited for people to see it,” he added.

What is the new 'Beverly Hills Cop' movie about?
In the new film, Murphy reprises his role as the wise-cracking Detroit police detective who wreaks havoc when he visits plush Beverly Hills.

On Dec. 14, Netflix shared the official teaser trailer for the flick, which offered some insight into the movie.

The trailer opened with a character played by Kevin Bacon (new to the franchise) marveling at how Foley is still on the streets after all these years, a seeming reference to his bad boy behavior.

"Running and gunning — I'm just amazed it doesn't get to you," Bacon says.

After the franchise's theme song plays, the character Jeffrey Friedman, who fans will remember from the first two films as a fellow cop played by Paul Reiser, appears, reminding Foley to be careful.

“I’m gonna be fine. They love me in Beverly Hills,” Foley replies.

At the end of the teaser, fans get a nostalgic surprise when they see Foley sitting in the backseat of a car with Taggart (John Ashton) and Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), who played Beverly Hills police detectives in the first two movies.

“So, how many people have you pissed off so far?” Taggart asks.

“I haven’t pissed off anybody!” Foley responds.

“Fifty-fifty,” Rosewood chimes in.

“Is it that high?” Foley asks in surprise.

Which stars are cast in 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F'?
In 2022, Netflix revealed that Murphy would reunite with his original “Beverly Hills Cop” co-stars, such as Reinhold, Ashton, Reiser and Bronson Pinchot for a new installment in the franchise, alongside newcomers, Bacon, Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige, who'll play Axel’s daughter, Jane.

Murphy says a lot of time has passed since he made the original “Beverly Hills Cop,” noting the latest iteration was a "rough" one to make.

“It was a hard one,” Murphy, 62, told People in November 2023. “I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore.”

“It was an action movie. So it was a rough one. But we got through it,” he added.

When will 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F' be released?
The movie will be available to stream on Netflix on June 3, 2024.

Eddie Murphy is back with a badge for the fourth franchise installment of his beloved series, with “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.”

The upcoming Netflix film, which teased a first look earlier this year, marks Murphy’s long-rumored reprisal the iconic character Detective Axel Foley. The ’80s-era franchise first began with Foley as a Detroit detective turned temporary L.A. police officer for an uncover mission. Now, after having worked in L.A. sporadically for decades, Foley teams up with his estranged daughter Jane (Taylour Paige) to take down yet another conspiracy.

Along the way, Foley lands a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and police captain (Kevin Bacon), but his old confidantes, including Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton), are still in the mix. Also returning? Franchise co-stars Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot.

“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” is directed by Mark Molloy from a script by Will Beall, Tom Gormican, and Kevin Etten. The film is based on characters created by Danilo Bach and Daniel Petrie, Jr. and a story by Beall. Jerry Bruckheimer produces “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” along with lead star Murphy and Chad Oman. Charisse Hewitt-Webster, Ray Angelic, and Lorenzo Di Bonaventura serve as executive producers, with Melissa Reid as a co-producer for Jerry Bruckheimer Films. This fourth film was announced in 2022.

Before “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” got off the ground, there was another sequel installment idea brewing. During an episode of the “50 MPH” podcast, which offers a comprehensive oral history of “Speed,” former Paramount vice president of production Don Granger revealed that stalled negotiations for “Speed” led him to pitch the screenplay as a “Beverly Hills Cop III” script as a “last-ditch effort” to get the screenplay made.

“I got about 15 minutes of traction before it was dismissed, because that was back when the mandate was to find a ‘Beverly Hill Cop III.’ So I was like, ‘Let’s put Axel Foley on the bus.’ It was a Hail Mary, man,” Granger said. “I might maintain it was a better movie, it would have been a better movie than ultimately what we got for ‘Beverly Hills Cop III,’ but that was my final Hail Mary.”

“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” star Gordon-Levitt told Empire that this feature actually goes off-script quite a bit, thanks to Murphy improvising on set.

“On that first day, waiting for the rig to reposition, we started talking about the song ‘Let the Good Times Roll’. The original version, the Harry Nilsson cover, and then other songs with that phrase in, by Sam Cooke and Jimi Hendrix,” Gordon-Levitt recalled of working with Murphy. “Eddie’s kind of a nerd about those things, as am I. … I also get my licks in. I wouldn’t be living up to this crazy opportunity if I wasn’t going to have a few myself. We got to do some really fun stuff.”

“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” starts streaming July 3 on Netflix. Check out the film’s first trailer below.

Eddie Murphy returns as Axel Foley in the fourth installment of the popular Beverly Hills Cop franchise on Netflix.
The new movie, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, follows Foley as he investigates the mysterious death of a long-time friend.
Netflix revealed footage from the upcoming movie as part of their 2024 slate trailer, which includes Foley in a helicopter.
Netflix shares new footage of Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F in its 2024 look-ahead trailer. After first playing the rule-breaking cop back in 1984, Murphy is now set to reprise his role as Axel Foley in an upcoming fourth installment. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F hails from director Mark Molloy, with a story that follows Foley as he returns to Beverly Hills to investigate the mysterious death of a long-time friend.

Now, ahead of the Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F release date of July 3, Netflix shares a look at its 2024 slate of original movies and TV shows, and the trailer includes new footage from the movie. Check out the trailer below, with the new footage featured at around 2:23:

The new footage sees Murphy's Axel in a helicopter screaming alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt's new character before it cuts to the pair going over Axel's file at a police precinct, teasing the type of tone audiences can expect from the long-awaited sequel.

What To Expect From Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
Can It Live Up To The Original Beverly Hills Cop Movies?
Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley holds his gun in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
The original Beverly Hills Cop movies all walked a unique tonal line between action and comedy, with the R-rated flicks featuring bloody shootouts and violence, in addition to Murphy's signature brand of quick-talking humor. The upcoming movie appears to be following this same trend, though the trailers, which have all been suitable for all-ages have yet to feature any graphic violence or profanity.

The original three Beverly Hills Cop movies are all available to stream on Paramount Plus.

In addition to Murphy, the Beverly Hills Axel F cast includes returning original stars Judge Reinhold and John Ashton as Billy Rosewood and John Taggart, respectively, as well as Paul Reiser as Jeffrey Friedman. Gordon-Levitt plays a new character named Detective Bobby Abbott in the film, with other newcomers including Kevin Bacon as Captain Grant, Bronson Pinchot as Serge, Taylour Paige as Jane, James Preston Rogers as Kurtz, and Patricia Belcher as Judge Angelic.

Molloy's previous directorial efforts don't provide a strong indication of how his personal style might manifest itself in the new Beverly Hills Cop sequel, as this marks the filmmaker's first big-budget feature film. The movie, which had a long and arduous development process, was originally set to be helmed by Bad Boys For Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, but the directing duo left the project in 2022. It remains to be seen whether Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will recapture the original films' glory, but the early footage is certainly promising.

Prepare to have the ’80s synth tones of the “Beverly Hills Cop” theme song stuck in your head again.

Netflix has released the trailer for “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” the fourth film in the popular “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise starring Eddie Murphy. The film is slated for release on the streamer in summer 2024.

Directed by Mark Molloy, “Axel F” hits screens about 30 years after “Beverly Hills Cop III” was released in 1994. Murphy returns as the titular character, a Detroit cop solving crimes in Beverly Hills. Judge Reinhold and John Ashton also return as local cops Lt. Billy Rosewood and Sgt. John Taggart.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kevin Bacon are both newcomers to the “Beverly Hills Cop” universe. Taylour Paige joins the cast as Foley’s estranged daughter, while Paul Reiser, Bronson Pinchot and Mark Pelligrino also star.

Popular on Variety
Murphy spoke to People about what it was like returning to the franchise decades later.

“It’s a really physical movie and I had to do some physical stuff,” he said. “I like to be on the couch, I don’t like to be jumping over and shooting and running. And I had to do some jumping and shooting and running. And as a result … at the end of the movie, I had a knee brace and my back is messed up. But the movie is gonna be special.”

Gordon-Levitt shared earlier this year, “Going to work on ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ isn’t like work. You think my life is a dream. I’m riding in a helicopter next to Eddie Murphy, and we’re making each other laugh.”

Veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who was behind the original “Beverly Hills Cop,” returned for “Axel F.” Production started after years of development setbacks and script rewrites. Murphy also produces in addition to Chad Oma, co-producer Melissa Reid and associate producer John K. Campbell. Executive producers include Ray Angelic and Charisse M. Hewitt. The script was penned by Will Beall, Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten, from characters created by Danilo Bach and Daniel Petrie, Jr.
