Dr. Stephen Smart graduated with a BS in chemical engineering (1984) and MD with honors from Washington University in St. Louis (1988). He completed residency in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital followed by a fellowship in allergy & immunology at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Smart then served 3 years active duty as teaching faculty at Wilford Hall US Air Force Medical Center in San Antonio with the rank of major before moving to Peoria, Illinois in 1996.

He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Illinois College of Medicine and is currently in the private practice of allergy, asthma, and immunology, having joined Springfield Clinic Peoria in 2021. He has a special interest in medical ethics and is President of the Peoria-area Christian Medical and Dental Association. He is also Past President of the Peoria Medical Society and a past-Trustee of the Illinois State Medical Society.

He has spoken on issues ranging from stem cell research and transgender medicine to Christian approaches to politics.

Dr. Smart was born on the near-south side of Chicago; married 38 years to Kate Smart; they have 8 children, including 4 who were adopted.
