Bodycam footage of officer firing on domestic violence suspect narrowly missing baby in his arms
On May 19, 2024, at approximately 10:20 p.m., San Diego Police dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from the 400 Block of 47th Street regarding a domestic violence incident. The caller stated her ex-boyfriend, who is the father of her child, entered her apartment, demanded she open her bedroom door, and threatened to shoot her if she didn't comply. Out of fear, the victim opened the door and let 29-year-old Steffon Nutall into the bedroom. Officers were on the way and the dispatcher was still on the line. Nutall picked up the phone and made threats to harm the victim and their 11-month-old Daughter. Nutall grabbed the infant and walked out of the apartment. As San Diego Police officers arrived at the scene, Nutall began to run away with the infant.
Nutall ran south through the 47th Street Trolley Station parking lot with officers in pursuit. Nutall ran to a second apartment complex, followed by multiple officers that began to search the area. Officer Gladysz located Nutall in a wooded area in the northwest corner of the apartment complex. Nutall was lying in a bush on a steep, wooded hill when officer Gladysz spotted him. The officer gave Nutall commands to show his hands multiple times. Nutall pointed an object in the direction of officer Gladysz. Officer Gladysz discharged his service weapon, striking Nutall. The video shows Nutall with an object in his right hand. He was holding the infant under his left arm. Nutall continued down the hillside.
San Diego Police helicopter (ABLE) directed officers to the infant located on the top of a retaining wall. Officers located Nutall lying in front of the retaining wall. Officers approached and secured the infant. With the infant safe, officers detained Nutall and began medical aid until the arrival of paramedics. Nutall was transported to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. He is still recovering. Security camera video shows Nutall dropping the gun in the 47th street trolley station parking lot. The gun came to rest next to a curb. Officer #3 chased Nutall across the trolley station and into the parking lot. Officer #3's bwc captured the firearm on the ground. The pursuing officers did not observe the firearm on the ground. The firearm dropped by Nutall in the Trolley Station parking lot was recovered.
