On May 3, 2024, at 1:17 a.m., Industry Station deputies responded to the 600 block of Willow Avenue, La Puente, regarding a possibly insane and suspicious person call. The call indicated a Hispanic male was screaming that someone had broken into his home. Prior to the deputies' arrival, the call was updated to the male fighting with family members at the location. The male was later identified as 43-year-old Isael Orellana from the City of La Puente. Deputies contacted Orellana outside of his residence and were informed by a neighbor that he was behaving violently, damaging property, and had just been fighting with a family member. Deputies attempted to detain Orellana, but he pulled away from their grasp, grabbed a metal paint roller from the ground, and wielded the paint roller at deputies. As deputies ordered him to drop the paint roller, Orellana raised it above his head and made a motion as if he was going to throw it at one of the deputies. One deputy deployed a burst of pepper spray toward Orellana as the other continued to detain him at gunpoint. Orellana then threw the paint roller at the deputy detaining him at gunpoint, striking him in the torso, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Orellana sustained gunshot wounds to the lower torso. Deputies rendered first aid until the arrival of Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics. Orellana was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The deputy who was struck by the paint roller complained of pain to his torso. No other persons were injured in the incident.
