"It's Payday!" is the second song on my album “ROLL OUT THE FOG!”

the song is a critique of the endless work-spend cycle, especially post C*vid. amongst the fear, panic and death, we were all expected to keep on trucking along, especially the essential workers. the verses embody a typical person in the US, being promised great things in their youth but as an adult you come to realize it was all a lie. they want us to line up and walk ourselves into the system.

the choruses take the perspective of the government/institutions, almost like a military "Uncle Sam" character telling everyone to get to work, put your blinders on. don't worry about the mess this all is. just work and spend. take what you earned during the drudgery of the work week, and go spend it on something distracting or pleasurable on the weekends. keep the machine running won't you?

"It's Payday!" is a reggae and ska-infused inspired during the choruses, to give it a party vibe while the lyrics talk about falling in line, pressuring people to stay in the trap. the verses are inspired by Indian music, latin rhythms, psychedelic music, and features heavy use of vocoders. in the second verse i wrote some melancholic brass lines to give a military funeral vibe. the bridge is a spacey, atmospheric, dreamy vibe to create a dream-like state where the protagonist is lamenting the trap that they are in.

"It's Payday!" - lyrics

When I was a kid
I could be anything I wanted
Now I can believe
All I want, but I can’t imagine
A quiet garden and a house with a tree
Not an empty wallet
A place to calm all my anxieties
But every house is haunted
I’ll be dreaming forever

Careful what you say!
Careful where you go!
Who you know!
Put your blinders on
Na, na, na, na
It’s payday!
Can’t you do your part?
Fighting for the flag
Get to work!
Never mind it all
Na, na, na, na
It’s payday!

When I was a kid
I could be anything I wanted
A dancer or a boy on the moon
An actor shining
But the lines are dotted
In every classroom we’re promised
We could be anything we bought it
And we’ll be dreaming forever

Careful what you say!
Careful where you go!
Who you know!
Put your blinders on
Na, na, na, na
It’s payday!
Can’t you do your part?
Fighting for the flag
Get to work!
Never mind it all
Na, na, na, na
It’s payday!
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
It’s payday!
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
It’s payday!

If you’ve had enough
Say you wanna try giving up
It’s getting tough, getting snubbed
Holding out your little cup
You’re standing up
Waiting in a endless line
For tiny crumbs
That don’t fill you much
And every friend has crossed you

So lost….
So lost….
So lost…
So lost in the...
So lost…
So lost…
So lost in the…
So lost in the rush...
So lost in the rush…
So lost in the rush…
So lost in the rush…
And if we stay here
Then we’ll be dreaming forever...

Careful what you say!
Careful where you go!
Who you know!
Put your blinders on
Na, na, na, na
It’s payday!
Can’t you do your part?
Fighting for the flag
Get to work!
Never mind it all
Na, na, na, na
It’s payday!
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
It’s payday!
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
It’s payday!
