A black bear entered an Arizona cabin on Thursday and mauled 15-year-old Brigham Hawkins, who has a rare neurological disorder, while he was watching TV.

The bear swiped at Hawkins’ face, causing injuries to his nose, cheek, forehead, and head. His family, in a nearby cabin, heard his screams and rushed to help.

Brigham’s older brother initially mistook the bear for a large dog but realized the truth when the bear chased him. Brigham’s father managed to reach his son, call 911, and help fend off the bear.

Authorities later tracked and killed the 3-year-old bear. State officials praised the family’s quick reaction, which prevented a potential tragedy, the New York Post reported.
