Darwin Among the Machines
[To the Editor of the Press, Christchurch, New Zealand, 13 June, 1863.] By Samuel Butler

Samuel Butler was a substantial inspiration to Frank Herbert's Dune. Butler predicted the creation of artificial intelligence as well as an AI Apocalypse long before the the invention of digital computers or language we have today to describe artificial intelligence existed. He definitely predicts the possibility of endless self replication by machines that can think independently from human direction. Butler was shockingly forward thinking here. In the future, we will post more primary sources. They will be skewed towards Christian writings, but secular or non-religious writings like this one we will also post here for your edification.

grace, peace, and goodwill towards men.
