One of seven tunes for the "virtual internet audition" for drumming on a cruise ship, this was take 1 of 1. There was both a track and chart provided which means that this is a reading gig and there is no negotiation on that point which gives one yet another reason to be able to read musical notation.
Specific to this recording; while I have pretty much played this song since birth, I had a different way that I normally play this song, utilizing a more "fusion" like groove. HOWEVER, reading musical notation is a requirement for this gig and chart was provided with the EXACT DRUM PART desired. Also, this exact drum part was very close to what Frank Beard played on the original recording. This leads me to a few thoughts:
1.) As session musician, I am required to sometime play what the producer thinks sounds best, not what I think sounds best and my job is to accommodate him by playing what he asks for and playing it convincingly as though it is the only part I have ever played.
2.) I've been told that I have a great history present in my playing and this is important because a professional musician should dedicate himself to the history of drumming as well as as the history of music. It will enrich your playing!
3.) The ultimate customer for the gig for which I was auditioning are the cruise line's passengers. They pay to travel on the cruise ship and get away from their everyday lives and my job is to help the cruise line deliver. Therefore, my paycheck comes indirectly from succeeding at delivering an experience to the passengers which meets or exceeds their expectations and gives the cruise line "good word of mouth advertising" and the ability to stay in business which provides me employment.
I'm not there to "educate" anyone as to what they should be listening to or what "legit music" is. When money is changing hands, this is called commerce...business...whether you are a drummer, guitar player, investment banker or systems analyst. Just ask Gene Simmons.....
