House Judiciary Committee invites Biden social media ‘censor’ to testify about 22M murders by vax

New York Post
WASHINGTON — The House Judiciary Committee on Friday invited outgoing White House director of digital strategy Rob Flaherty to testify about his alleged efforts to “censor” social media conversations — setting up a potential showdown with a key player in the Biden administration’s “flagging” of content for removal.

“Due to your personal and direct involvement in the executive branch’s efforts to censor or remove certain viewpoints on social media, we believe that you are uniquely situated to advance our oversight and inform potential legislative reforms,” Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) wrote to Flaherty.

Jordan wrote that “a government-approved or facilitated censorship regime poses a grave threat to the First Amendment and Americans’ civil liberties” and asked Flaherty to “contact Committee staff as soon as possible but by no later than 5:00 p.m. on July 7, 2023, to schedule your transcribed interview.”

The Judiciary Committee request isn’t binding but could be converted into an obligatory subpoena if Flaherty chooses not to participate.

Flaherty and White House spokespeople did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

Missouri Solicitor General John Sauer, who worked on a legal case brought by his state and Louisiana over alleged government-requested censorship of social media, testified in March to the Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on the alleged “weaponization” of government that Flaherty was a key player in pushing companies to remove First Amendment-protected speech online.

Sauer said evidence indicates that Flaherty led the pressure campaign and that “virtually everything that I can recall here was lawful First Amendment-protected speech that was being targeted.”

“The characterization of them as suggestions is contradicted by overwhelming evidence,” Sauer said. “To call Mr. Flaherty’s communication ‘suggestions’ is akin to saying that the Earth is flat or the moon is made of green cheese.”

Then-White House press secretary Jen Psaki openly said in July 2021 that the White House was “flagging” alleged misinformation, including about COVID-19 vaccines, for removal.

“We are flagging problematic posts for Facebook that spread disinformation,” she said at the time.

The government policing of alleged misinformation later garnered pushback from civil libertarians when it emerged last year that the Department of Homeland Security had an alleged portal through which federal officials made moderation requests, including to squelch “parody accounts or accounts with virtually no followers or influence,” according to the Intercept.

The American Civil Liberties Union tweeted in response to the portal, “The First Amendment bars the government from deciding for us what is true or false, online or anywhere.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre denied that the White House used that particular mechanism to seek moderation.
