Eye Styes (also known as Hordeolum) are acute bacterial infections of the eyelid. There are two types of hordeolum: external and internal, both of which have different symptoms. Styes are caused by a “clogged” or “blocked” gland on the eyelid margin, leading to build of glandular product, and subsequent secondary bacterial infection. In this lesson, we discuss the most common bacterial cause, the signs and symptoms of styes, how they are diagnosed, and what you can do to treat them.
