China says military drills encircling Taiwan designed to test its ability to ‘seize power’

China’s military drills around Taiwan, aimed at testing its ability to “seize power” over the island, entered their second day on Friday, according to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

These exercises, the largest in over a year, follow the inauguration of Taiwan’s new president, Lai Ching-te, who advocates for Taiwan’s sovereignty, angering Beijing.

Labeling Lai as a “dangerous separatist,” Beijing condemned his call for China to end its intimidation of Taiwan.

The PLA, which significantly outmatches Taiwan’s military, initiated the drills on Thursday, deploying warships and fighter jets around Taiwan and its outlying islands as a “punishment for separatist acts.”

The two-day drills involve joint operations of China’s army, navy, air force, and rocket force in the Taiwan Strait and areas north, south, and east of Taiwan, CNN reported.
