Northern Kentucky University hosting panel on school safety

More education majors in college are asking for more instruction on how to keep their classrooms safe if there's an active shooter. "Do I run? Do I hide? Do I go into this building? Do I stay out here? I don't know," NKU education student Viniza Ramirez Fabian said.  Northern Kentucky University will host a panel discussion on school safety May 1. "Over half the class had some question that related to school safety," said Sara Runge, the assistant chair of NKU's undergraduate programs teacher education. "I realized this is something that we needed to address." There have already been 20 school shootings in the U.S. this year, according to CNN. NKU administrators said they're hoping the forum will give them the information they need to start a curriculum to deal with with problem. "We need to be looking at ways to incorporate this in," Cindy Reed, the dean of NKU's college of education and human service, said.  Superintendents from Boone County, Erlanger-Elsmere and Covington schools will be on the panel, along with the NKU police chief. The event next Tuesday is free and open to the public.
