Directed by and co-starring Justin Baldoni, It Ends With Us adapts the highest-selling novel of hugely popular romance novelist Colleen Hoover and marks the first feature adaptation of her work. Adapted for the screen by Christy Hall, the film tells the story of Lily Bloom (Lively), a woman who overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life in Boston and chase a lifelong dream of opening her own business. A chance meeting with charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Baldoni) sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall deeply in love, Lily begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her parents’ relationship. When Lily’s first love, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), suddenly reenters her life, her relationship with Ryle is upended, and Lily realizes she must learn to rely on her own strength to make an impossible choice for her future.

Also starring Jenny Slate, Hasan Minhaj and Amy Morton, the film is produced by Alex Saks for Saks Picture Company, along with Jamey Heath on behalf of Wayfarer Studios and Hall. Exec producers include Lively and Hoover, as well as Steve Sarowitz, Andrea Ajemian, Andrew Calof and Baldoni on behalf of Wayfarer Studios, which co-financed the project.
Things heat up between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni in the first trailer for “It Ends With Us,” which is soundtracked by Taylor Swift’s “My Tears Ricochet.”

The romance film is based on the best-selling novel written by Colleen Hoover. Lively stars as Lily, a small-town girl who moves to Boston to start her own business. There, she meets Ryle, a neurosurgeon finishing his residency played by Baldoni. The two instantly hit it off but are looking for different things.

“Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his ‘no dating’ rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place,” the book’s description explains. “As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan — her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.”

Popular on Variety
The film was originally slated for a Feb. 9 release. However, production shut down in June 2023 because of the WGA strike. After the strikes ended, filming resumed in January of this year. Now, Sony plans to debut the film on Aug. 9.

“Lily resonated with an enormous amount of people, as the success of the book made clear,” Lively, who also served as executive producer, told People. “Stepping into a character who’s had such a meaningful impact is an honor to take on. I loved Lily. And I hope that love is felt by those who care about her like I do, and also those who are getting to know her for the first time in this film.”

“It Ends With Us” is directed and executive produced by Baldoni through his company Wayfarer Studios.

Blake Lively stars in the intense drama as Lily, a woman who overcomes a traumatic childhood with an abusive father to begin a new life in Boston. It Ends With Us author addresses Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni casting controversy
Directed by Baldoni with a screenplay by Christy Hall, It Ends With Us is the first Hoover story to be adapted for the screen after it took BookTok by storm. The movie also stars Jenny Slate, Hasan Minhaj, and Amy Morton, and is executive produced by Lively and Baldoni alongside Hoover, Steve Sarowitz, Andrew Calof, and Andrea Ajemian.

Lively and Baldoni's castings as Lily and Ryle previously sparked controversy due to the age discrepancies between the actors and their characters (Lively is 36 while Lily is 23 in the book, and Baldoni is 40 and Ryle is supposed to be 30.) But Hoover told Today last year that the film adaptation provided an opportunity to remedy the ages she believes the characters should have been in the source material.
Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni share an intense connection in It Ends With Us first-look photos
"Back when I wrote It Ends With Us, the new adult [genre] was very popular," Hoover said at the time. "You were writing college-age characters. That's what I was contracted to do. I made Lily very young. I didn't know that neurosurgeons went to school for 50 years. There's not a 20-something neurosurgeon. As I started making this movie, I'm like, 'We need to age them, because I messed up.' So that's my fault."

When it comes to Lively and Baldoni portraying her characters in the movie, Hoover is "extremely happy with the casting."

It Ends With Us hits theaters Aug. 9.
Back during the pandemic, the book-obsessed side of TikTok, affectionately referred to as BookTok, became captivated with Colleen Hoover's 2016 best-selling emotional romance novel It Ends With Us. So when it was announced last year that Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni would be starring in the movie adaptation, fans could hardly wait. And now that the first official trailer has just dropped (see above!), eager readers have a lot to say.

The book, which is loosely based on the relationship between Colleen's own parents, follows Lily Bloom (Blake), who overcomes growing up through an abusive childhood only to see similar patterns reemerge later during her adult life when she falls in love with successful neurosurgeon, Ryle Kincaid.

When the first few photos of filming emerged last year, fans were less than pleased — comments about casting, styling choices and more were circulating the Internet, leaving many to question if the book they so loved would fall flat on film. But after Sony dropped the first trailer (and a release date of August 9!), it would seem the naysayers are pulling back on their doubt — at least judging off the comments under it on YouTube.

"I'M LITERALLY CRYING. THIS LOOKS SO GOOD AND SO TRUE TO THE BOOKS. HOW COULD ANYONE HAVE DOUBTED BLAKE AS LILY OR JUSTIN AS RYLE? They are so perfect for their respective role. I’m already in tears. FREAKING CANT WAIT," one person wrote on YouTube. "[I] didn't expect to LOVE this!" another said. "This looks way better than I was expecting. The flower shop is exactly what I envisioned. [I'm' still not sold on the guy playing Atlas, but that's okay!" someone else chimed in. A different person commented, " I AM BLOWN AWAY...BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG..I LOVE THE BOOK...CANT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE 🥹 😭".

Alongside Blake and Justin, the latter of who is the director and producer through his company Wayfarer Studios, the cast features 1923's Brandon Sklenar, Jenny Slate and Hasan Minhaj.

Although with the trailer it was announced the film's release date would be August 9, this comes on the heels of two previous release delays, so there could be a chance it gets pushed a third time. It's set to exclusively be in theaters for just one day, and then will most likely move to a streaming service. Reports say it's probably going to be on Netflix sometime by late November or December, given Sony's partnership with the streaming platform.

The trailer starts with Blake's Lily Bloom running her flower shop and believing in the idea of an ideal love story. She is head over heels when she meets Ryle Cincaid portrayed by Justin. As the movie progresses, we see Ryle's short-tempered behaviour contrary to his charming persona when he started dating Lily. Lily realises that there is nothing she can do to fix this toxic relationship as Ryle continues to loose his cool. Even though he apologises for his anger issues, it is clear that there is no actual compatibility between these two individuals. How the couple sails through their contrasting personalities amid misunderstanding, miscommunication, insecurity and heartbreak sets the narrative of the film.

Sony Pictures has dropped the first trailer for It Ends With Us, the troubled-romance film starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, based on the bestseller by Colleen Hoover.

The film, from Columbia Pictures and Wayfarer Studios, was originally slated for a February release but that was delayed when production shut down due to the WGA strike. A subsequent June 21 release was pushed back to a current debut of August 9.

The trailer, set to Taylor Swift’s “My Tears Ricochet,” neatly sets up the plot. Official synopsis: “It Ends With Us, the first Colleen Hoover novel adapted for the big screen, tells the compelling story of Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), a woman who overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life in Boston and chase a lifelong dream of opening her own business. A chance meeting with charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni) sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall deeply in love, Lily begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her parents’ relationship. Blake Lively's fans are in for a treat as the trailer of her next film It Ends With Us dropped last evening and it has left everyone impressed. Starring her and Justin Baldoni, the film's storyline is about an epic romance quickly crumbling into a toxic and abusive relationship. The film is also directed by Justin.

IT ENDS WITH US

Blake runs a flower shop and her name is Lily Bloom. She falls madly in love with Ryle Cincaid played by Justin. The trailer then goes on to show crisply how a man who seemed charming at first soon starts showing signs of being short-tempered and has severe anger issues and there seems to be no compatibility at all between the two.

The narrative of the film further builds upon how the couple navigates through this turbulent relationship of constant fights, disagreements, heartbreak and miscommunication.

IT ENDS WITH US

The film is slated to release on August 9, 2024.
The trailer for It Ends With Us showcases a romantic movie that takes a darker turn into abusive relationships.
The controversial novel has gained popularity on TikTok for its dealing with themes of domestic violence and abuse cycles.
The film, set for release on August 9, will stay faithful to the book's narrative about breaking the cycle of abuse.
The first trailer for It Ends With Us has been released, revealing the highly-anticipated Colleen Hoover adaptation. Starring Blake Lively, It Ends With Us is one of Hoover's most popular and controversial novels, going viral on TikTok for its subject matter. It also helped bolster Hoover's career, and the author has since gone on to publish several more novels that have been ravenously consumed by readers.

Ahead of its release later this year, Sony Pictures has revealed the first trailer for It Ends With Us. Check it out below:

The trailer begins with what feels like will be the start of a typical romance movie, with Lively's Lily Bloom meeting Ryle (Justin Baldoni) after opening her own flower shop. However, the trailer quickly takes a turn, revealing the abusive nature of their relationship together as Lily struggles with what feels like a bleak future. This is made more complicated when a past lover, Atlas (Brandon Sklenar), comes back into her life.

Why It Ends With Us Is So Controversial
Blake Lively as Lily looking upset in It Ends with Us
Following Lively's breakout Gossip Girl role, the star has been in a variety of film roles, from the 2016 survival horror The Shallows to the crime comedy A Simple Favor. Her new role in this upcoming romantic drama is unlike anything she's done before, though, with a story that tackles the cycle of abuse and domestic violence in a very direct way. This has garnered controversy on TikTok, with some uncomfortable with how the abuse is depicted in the novel.

Despite this controversy, though, It Ends With Us became a trending TikTok book, partially because of its divisive depiction and for using a romance novel to bring the subject more attention. Given how direct the movie trailer is about how the story is going to play out, it seems viewers will be more braced for what's to come than readers who didn't expect an abuse narrative. Depending on how the film is able to tackle the subject matter, it could become a story that resonates beyond its original online audience.

While some criticism has been tossed around about Lively's casting in It Ends With Us, as it ages up Lily's character from the book, the trailer seems uncompromising in how it will be depicting the story. This means the narrative overall will likely go unchanged, with depictions of domestic violence coalescing in a movie about stopping a horrifically real cycle. With the movie a few months away, it won't be long until more details are revealed about the anticipated BookTok adaptation.

It Ends With Us arrives in theaters on August 9.

What is the It Ends With Us release date?
Well, it's hard to know 100 per cent because it's already changed three times. First of all, the release date for It Ends With Us was confirmed as 9th February 2024.

But unfortunately, February came and went, and It Ends With Us wasn't released. Then, it was pushed back to the 21st June 2024, before PEOPLE shared the film had been delayed for seven weeks more, and wouldn't hit cinema screens until 9th August 2024. Um, what is going on?

The movie has been in the works since 2019, but filming only began in May 2023 in New Jersey. A month later, while half of the filming had been completed, production was then halted due to the writer's strike. It then resumed at the end of 2023, when the strike ended.

Colleen Hoover defends It Ends With Us after fan backlash
After a number of behind the scenes photos of Blake Lively on set as main character Lily were shared in spring 2023, fans of the novel were less than impressed by the looks. Many suggested the costumes Blake was wearing were nothing like how they had imagined the character of Lily.

And following the backlash, Colleen Hoover, the writer of It Ends With Us, has responded, saying she's not worried about the adaptation's costumes. Speaking to Jenna Bush Hager at Book Bonanza, Hoover said: "I don’t remember describing outfits at all. I don’t care what they have on. In my head, it’s about the conversation they’re having and the story. It’s the same way in the movie."

Colleen added fans had only seen a few looks that were "completely out of context" and insisted she's not worried about the film adaptation.

In fact, she went onto say she cried whilst watching footage of the film on set recently. "I got to see the footage they filmed thus far," she said. "I’m not a crier — I know that I write emotional books, but I’m not an emotional person — and I cried so much on set."

In spring 2023, filming on the adaptation of It Ends With Us began in New York, with Blake Lively stepping out in character as Lily. And, er, judging by the reaction on social media, it's safe to say fans have some *thoughts* about her outfits.

As one fan put it, "Photos from the set of It Ends with Us were released today. I love Blake Lively, but this is not Lily Bloom. Not even close. Why does she look so frumpy and disheveled? And like 20 years older than described in the books? Let’s discuss."

Someone else said, "Maybe we just need to trust the process, but I kind of just hate that they decided to cast so much older than what the characters in the book were" while a third added, "The wig, the outfit, none of this is reading a young girl in her twenties starting life in the big city."

Eek.

Who is in the cast of It Ends With Us?
Brandon Sklenar from 1923 will play Atlas, Lily's love interest from school who comes back into her life when she bumps into him at a restaurant. Reacting to the news, author Colleen Hoover wrote on her Instagram, "They announced Atlas! Cannot wait for this. Loving the cast so far. Feels like a dream 😍"

Blake Lively has been cast as the lead Lily. Colleen Hoover announced the news herself on her Instagram on 26th January 2023, saying: "Our Lily is going to be played by Blake Lively. Blake Lively, y’all. She’s my dream Lily."

Colleen also announced Ryle will be played by Jane The Virgin's Justin Baldoni, who will also be directing and producing the film through his production company Wayfarer Entertainment company.

Speaking about Justin as Ryle, Colleen said: "When I first met Justin Baldoni, who is directing the film for It Ends With Us, I immediately wanted him to be Ryle. I just thought that he had what it takes to play that character. The good news is he’s gonna be Ryle. So we have our Ryle and our Lily."

We're so excited!

What is It Ends With Us about?
It Ends With Us is an adaption of the novel of the same name, by BookTok's favourite author Colleen Hoover.

The novel was released in 2016 and has since sold over one million copies, thanks in part to its popularity on TikTok. The story is inspired by the relationship between Hoover's own mother and father, and she's previously described it as "the hardest book I've ever written".

The novel is centred around Lily, a college graduate who moves to Boston in the hope of opening up her own flower shop. There, she falls in love with neurosurgeon Ryle, whilst also grappling with the memories of her past love Atlas, and coming to terms with the abuse in her parent's relationship.

But when Atlas suddenly reappears, Lily's entire life with Ryle is threatened. Whilst we don't know how close to the book the film will be, we're hoping it's going to be as faithful an adaptation as possible.
