"Nothing is as it seems. And the truth will be revealed." Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for the US remake of the film titled Longing, which was originally an Israeli film from filmmaker Savi Gabizon (aka Savi Gavison). The film is a direct remake of his own 2017 film also called Longing (or Ga'agua), and it is once again written and directed by Gabizon this time. A business mogul named Daniel Bloch runs into his old small town girlfriend from 20 years ago while she is visiting the big city only to find out that they had a child together that he was unaware of, but has since died. This remake is set to open in the US in June this summer. Starring Richard Gere as Daniel, with Diane Kruger, Suzanne Clément, Marnie McPhail, Jessica Clement, Tomaso Sanelli, and Shauna MacDonald. This trailer reveals almost the entire plot though that doesn't help much, because this just doesn't look like it's good enough to pay to watch anyway.

Here's the official trailer for Savi Gabizon's film Longing, direct from Lionsgate's YouTube:

Longing Trailer

Golden Globe Award-winning actor Richard Gere and Diane Kruger star in this captivating drama and English-remake of the celebrated film by the original Director. Daniel Bloch (Gere) is shocked to discover a startling secret from his past and is immediately consumed by the extraordinary twists of a new life he never could have imagined. With each new encounter, Daniel uncovers a deeper layer of this fascinating mystery until he arrives at a crossroad in his own life. Longing is again written and directed by the Israeli filmmaker Savi Gabizon, director of the films Shuroo and Longing (2017) previously, as well as episodes of the "Lost and Found" series. It's produced by Daniel Bekerman, Neil Mathieson, and Alexander Vinnitski. This hasn't premiered at any film festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. Lionsgate releases Savi Gabizon's new Longing in select US theaters on June 7th, 2024, then on VOD starting June 28th coming up soon.
Nothing is as it seems in Richard Gere and Diane Kruger's new drama.

On May 14, Lionsgate and Grindstone Films debuted the trailer for Longing exclusively with PEOPLE.

In the film, Gere, 74, plays a man named Daniel who reconnects with his former romantic partner Rachel after multiple decades apart — only to learn that she secretly gave birth to their son, named Alan, after their breakup.

Daniel is even more shocked to learn that Alan recently died in a car accident, leaving him desperate to learn about his son's life.

The trailer shows Daniel as he travels to Alan's school and meets his best friend and girlfriend, as well as a teacher named Alice (played by Kruger, 47).

Soon, Daniel begins to realize the circumstances surrounding Alan's death and relationships were more complicated than he realized — including that Alan's girlfriend is pregnant and he appeared to have an inappropriate crush on Alice.

The director told PEOPLE in a statement that his idea for the movie came about while he went through a divorce and grew concerned over the direction of his relationship with his children.

"The plot, which began rooted in my day-to-day life, drifted off to other worlds and took on different guises," Gabizon says. "But behind the heavy makeup, one can occasionally make out its true features. Longing is an attempt at examining parenthood."

"I've always wanted to create a film which is comprised of absurd situations, because they allow access to deep emotions without falling into the trap of sentimentality and cliché," the director adds.

Longing is in theaters June 7.

Richard Gere is back onscreen with his own mini renaissance.

The legendary actor leads the English language remake of Savi Gabizon’s 2017 Israeli drama “Longing” alongside Diane Kruger. The Lionsgate/Grindstone film “follows Daniel Bloch (Gere) who is shocked to discover a secret from his past and is immediately consumed by the extraordinary twists of a new life he never could have imagined. Daniel continues to dive into the mystery of his own identity until he arrives at a crossroad in his own life,” per the official synopsis.

Writer/director Gabizon returns to helm the remake, which co-stars Suzanne Clément. The original “Longing” premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where writer/director Gabizon won the BNL People’s Choice Award. The film went on to screen at TIFF.

Gabizon made his feature debut “Shuroo” in 1991, followed by “Lovesick on Nana Street” in 1995. Both features won Israeli Academy Ophir Awards. Gabizon’s third film “Nina’s Tragedies” was released in 2003 and made history as the first Israeli narrative feature to be shown at the Sundance Film Festival. Gabizon released “Longing” in 2017; the remake will be his fifth film and first since 2017.

“Longing” is produced by Daniel Bekerman under his Scythia Films banner along with Current Flow Entertainment’s Alexander Vinnitski, with Anamorphic Media Inc’s Sara Shaak and Matthew Lyons providing lead financing. The Solution Entertainment’s Myles Nestel and Lisa Wilson executive produce and are handled global sales, with distributor Lionsgate/Grindstone picking up the feature.

Executive producer Wilson previously collaborated with Gere on “Arbitrage” and “Norman.”

Both Gere and Kruger have films debuting at Cannes, with Gere starring in Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada” and Kruger cast in David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds.” Kruger replaced Léa Seydoux in the role of Vincent Cassel’s deceased wife after Seydoux parted ways with the project. Seydoux told IndieWire that Kruger would be “great” in the film as Seydoux herself needed an acting “break” despite loving “working with David.”

Ironically, “Longing” was also filmed in Canada, keeping Gere local for the Ontario production before he led Schrader’s feature. Gere portrays an aging filmmaker who also grapples with his past secrets, including his family legacy, in the Schrader film.

“Longing” hits theaters on Friday, June 7. Check out the film’s first trailer below.
Richard Gere must grapple with freshly uncovered private secrets in the official trailer for the upcoming mystery drama "Longing," where he sets off on a journey to unravel the mystery surrounding his son's untimely demise.

In the upcoming film, Richard Gere's character, a successful businessman, is blindsided by the revelation that he fathered a son years ago with a former flame -- a fact unknown to him until after the young man's tragic passing at the tender age of 18. Driven by a desire for answers, Gere embarks on a poignant quest to retrace his son's final footsteps, leading him to a prestigious high school where his son attended before his death.

Grappling with the complexities of parenthood and a son's past he never knew, Gere navigates the labyrinth of secrets shrouding his son's life and death. Along the way, he encounters Diane Kruger's character, a school teacher intimately acquainted with his son, whose revelations threaten to shatter the illusion of perfection surrounding the young man. As Gere delves deeper into the mystery, tensions escalate, and suspicions mount, leaving viewers questioning the truth behind his son's demise. Is the teacher a harbinger of truth, or does she harbor darker secrets of her own?

Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Savi Gabizon, "Longing" is the English-language remake of Gabizon's acclaimed 2017 Israeli original of the same name.

Co-starring Suzanne Clement, Marnie McPhail, Stuart Hughes, Tomaso Sanelli, and Jessica Clement, "Longing" is due to open in select theaters on June 7th, with a VOD release to follow on June 28th.

Here’s the synopsis:

Director Savi Gabizon is remaking his film Longing with Richard Gere & Diane Kruger in the lead roles.
Longing tells the story of Daniel, who discovers he had a son he never knew about after his ex reveals his death.
The remake will explore themes of parenthood, with a focus on drama and mystery, premiering on June 7.
It's not often that a director gets to remake their own movie, but this year Israeli filmmaker Savi Gabizon (Nina's Tragedies) is about to become one of the few exceptions. He's remaking Longing, his 2017 movie that was a standout in film festivals when it premiered. The remake retains the same title, but this time it will be set in an American location with Richard Gere (Maybe I Do) and Diane Kruger (Marlowe) in the main roles. The remake is set to premiere on June 7.

Longing tells the story of Daniel Block (Gere), a man who is forced to come to terms with his past when a secret comes back to haunt him. The secret will come back in the form of encounters that will make him reflect on his mistakes and present some twists that will shake up his present and future. One of those encounters involves Alice (Kruger), his son's favorite teacher. Additionally, Suzanne Clément (Laurence Anyways) plays Rachel, the boy's mother.

In the trailer, it is revealed that Gere’s character Daniel lived several years with no idea that he had a son, and he only discovers it on the day that his ex decides to reveal that the boy died in an accident. Daniel then embarks on a journey not only to get to know the boy through other people’s accounts but also to try to set the record straight about the mysterious circumstances that caused the boy’s death.

'Longing' Director Savi Gabizon Explains the Themes of the Movie

The original Longing was a Venice Film Festival nominee. Back at the event in 2017, the filmmaker addressed the long gaps between his films — the original Longing came out after a fourteen-year hiatus — and revealed that he enjoys taking his time with his projects because rushing a story takes him nowhere. He also touched on the themes of Longing and stated he "wanted to do a film about parenthood." He added that he wanted to "examine special aspects of parenthood that you usually don't examine."

At this point, it's not clear if the Longing remake will follow the same structure as the original. The 2017 Israeli movie had two very distinct acts; one more dramatic and the other more centered around comedy. The choice of Gere as a protagonist might indicate that this might be the direction the remake is going since the actor has had plenty of experience in both genres. Judging by the trailer, however, the drama and mystery of it all should take over for most of the story.

Longing is set to premiere in theaters on June 7. You can watch the trailer below:
