Water in all mystic systems means ‘spirit’. If received it may be represented as symbolic rivers, streams or waterfalls, even ‘rain’. But these symbols describe spiritual input, received from outside our own mind. But spirit can also be received that ‘rises’ from inner reserves, often represented symbolically as lakes or ponds, built up by us. This 'inner spirit' can be used during ‘purification’, which is either long and drawn out, or it may be rather dramatic and symbolically represented using a Fountain.
