#4 Consciousness can only be singular

“Distinction of any kind, it is a wrong understanding, even through logic. If you consider the waves in the ocean are different from the ocean, or the water itself – then by itself, it is a wrong understanding.

If you consider that you and God are two distinct things, for example, that is a complete misunderstanding of the truth. Or, that the gold is different from the ring – two distinct things. The ring is gold.

All apparent beings are God – cannot be distinct from God. But in the churches they present God as something external; something which is superior; something which is of another essence, or nature.

So, we Advaitins, we believe that this is a terrible mistake. We say, how can you be different and distinct from the ultimate source of everything? How can you be a distinct thing? And we say that there is only Brahman; there is only God; there is only the ultimate essence of everything and everyone. And we say even what quantum physicists say, that Consciousness can be only singular - cannot be plural.

So, there is only Consciousness; Awareness; Brahman and everything appears and disappears in it. And the essence of everything that appears and disappears, cannot be other than the essence itself, which is Consciousness; Awareness; Brahman.”
