This bottleneck showcase was a standard item in Furry's repertoire; he had used the same musical backdrop for an earlier recording, "Why Don't You Come Home Blues." As folklorist/musicologist W.K. McNeil observed, these pieces belong to the "Poor Boy" family of songs (see also Lead Belly's "Packin' Trunk Blues" and Son House's "Pearline").
Furry Lewis - vocal & guitar. Recorded August 28, 1928 in Memphis, TN and released on the Victor label. And yes, "Cannon-Ball Blues" (rather than "cannonball" or "cannon ball") is the correct title.
