The Symbolism of Gardens

Gardens reflect the level one has ascended spiritually. At each stage of ascent one is figuratively tending to and nurturing the garden of your soul.

Some pictures are from the Arab medical textbook , - the Tacuinum Sanitatis. Although written in the 11th century, it describes the beneficial and harmful properties of plants, and sets forth the six essential elements for well-being:
• sufficient food and drink in moderation,
• fresh air,
• alternations of activity and rest,
• alternations of sleep and wakefulness,
• removal of bad ‘humours’ [stale energy] and
• the effects of states of mind.

Jardin Majorelle - Photos by D Rock-Evans. Jardin Majorelle is in Marrakesh. It is not a large garden but features many of the symbolic garden attributes – it is walled and has small ponds as well as fountains and numerous symbolic plants. Some of the plants have been chosen for the climate, and as such have no specific symbolic associations, but there is a noticeable use of cactii. There is much use of very bright clear colours, as well as paths which have a distinct outline and colour [red mostly]. The blue used is intense – the sort of blue found in many religious paintings.
