The Symbolism of Virgo, Virgins and the High Priestess in the Tarot

Virgo is a constellation and a Sign of the Zodiac. And the word Virgo is Latin for Virgin. The symbol of the ‘Virgin’ is an archetype, usually depicted with angel-like wings, with one or more stalks of wheat in her left hand [or a sword], and a palm branch in her right. But Virgin has a very distinct meaning here, not the one we normally think of, and it is connected to the Mysteries. Furthermore,in the Tarot she has been given a card called the High Priestess.

1) The word virgo is related to virga, 'a young shoot, twig', virgate", the Latin virgatus means 'made of twigs', The Indo-European root *weis-, means a 'quick stroke or sweeping movement' . 2) The use of bunches of twigs in saunas is well known for improving circulation and improving health, thus this could be literal and figurative
