‘House Targaryen’
The House of the Dragon storyline is nearly 200 years older than the Game of Thrones timeline. It describes the tussle for Iron Throne within House Targaryen and the start of the civil war within the house.
HBO is rolling out some beauteous dragon footage and a potty-mouthed Aegon in the season 2 trailer for House of the Dragon, which returns June 16.

The drama based on on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” is setting up an epic war between the Targaryens and the Hightowers following the Season 1 finale, which saw tragedy befall the former (R.I.P Prince Lucerys Velaryon) at the hands of the latter (Prince Aemond Targaryen). The series was largely able to continue filming last summer during the strikes as it has a largely British cast under Equity contracts rather than SAG-AFTRA ones.

“House of the Dragon” is asking viewers to pick a side in Season 2: Rhaenyra’s black faction or Alicent’s green team?

HBO dropped two unique trailers Thursday for Season 2, which premieres on June 16. One trailer focuses on Rhaenrya, Prince Daemon and their forces on Dragonstone, and the other is centered on the King’s Landing team of Alicent, her father Otto and her children King Aegon and Prince Aemond. Taking place 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” will officially mark the start of the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war.

In the wake of the Season 1 finale, in which Aemond murders Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys and his dragon, war is imminent in Westeros. The blacks and the greens are both gathering their forces, dragons and new allies to face off in a bloody, fiery battle to the death. In King’s Landing, young King Aegon is doubling down on his claim to the Iron Throne, which his half-sister Rhaenyra views as her rightful inheritance from their late father. The trailers also tease a return to Winterfell, the snowy home of the Starks that is ruled over by Cregan Stark in the prequel.

The fantasy drama series is based on author George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood,” which details the history of House Targaryen. Season 1 followed Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) in her fight to be named the chosen heir of King Viserys I (Patty Considine) and the lead-up to the war of succession between the Targaryens.

The returning cast includes Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen, Eve Best as Rhaena Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon, Fabien Frankel as Criston Cole and Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon Targaryen.

The cast also includes Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Phoebe Campbell, Bethany Antonia, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall and Matthew Needham.

Episode 1 of Season 1 drew nearly 10 million viewers, marking HBO’s biggest series premiere in history. The 10-episode first season of “House of the Dragon” aired from Aug. 21 to Oct. 23, 2022.

Martin is the co-creator and executive producer. Ryan Condal is co-creator, showrunner and executive producer. Sara Hess, Alan Taylor, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Loni Peristere and Vince Gerardis are executive producers.

Season 1 of House of the Dragon picked up eight Emmy nominations including Outstanding Drama Series (winning for its costumes) as it set up the story of House Targaryen almost 200 years before the events of GoT. By the end, the family after the death of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) had been cleaved in two, with one faction led by Viserys’ wife Alicent (Cooke) and her son Aegon (Glynn-Carney) and the other behind his daughter — and original heir — Rhaenyra (D’Arcy) and her husband Prince Daemon (Smith).

What Will Happen In House Of The Dragon Season 2?
Daemon, Rhaenyra, Lucerys, Rhaenys, and more in House of the Dragon
The House of the Dragon season 2 story should very much continue right where season 1 leaves off, which is to say: the Dance of the Dragons. With Aegon and Rhaenyra declaring themselves as King and Queen, respectively, the battle for the Iron Throne is truly on. While it's unclear how much of Fire & Blood will be adapted for season 2, the book does offer insight into major events that could take place during the next set of episodes.

Showrunner Ryan Condal teased that the events of the Blood and Cheese storyline could be happening when he mentioned he had been studying historical rat traps. In addition, the storytelling aspect of House of the Dragon season 2 will be much more akin to Game of Thrones. Season 1 largely acted as set up and exposition, explaining who was who in the Targaryen Civil War and what got the ordeal started in the first place. Now that's out of the way, there shouldn't be any more major time jumps or recasts.

There is also a hint that the second season of House of the Dragon will feature a pivotal battle in the Dance of the Dragons with the Battle of Rook's Rest. This is one of the first significant battles with the two armies facing off against each other. Given it will feature dragon-on-dragon action, this will likely be the big action sequence of HotD season 2, which will include some key casualties on both sides. With the confirmation that the dragon-killing scorpion crossbows will also be used suggests there will be dragon deaths as well as humans.

How The Nine Voyages Spinoff Connects To House Of The Dragon
A composite image of Corlys Velaryon and a ship in House of the DragonCustom Image By Dalton Norman
Coming as one of the many Game of Thrones series in production, the Nine Voyages spinoff was given a strong production update in early 2024. The series will serve as a prequel to House of the Dragon, a series that is itself a prequel to Game of Thrones, and will chronicle Corlys Velaryon as he embarked on his legendary sea voyages. Though little is known about the show at this point, it likely won't have much of an effect on House of the Dragon since the events already happened. Instead, it will serve as a backstory for Corlys Valeryon and flesh out his character and the Velaryon family.

The first teaser trailer for House of the Dragon season 2 went a long way in confirming suspicions about the upcoming episodes, and the 2-minute preview showed off a lot of rising action. The upcoming season will undoubtedly live up to the moniker of fire and blood, as brief snippets showed armies marching to war with dragons involved as well. A lot of questions still linger about House of the Dragon season 2, but the first look proved that the upcoming episodes are worth the wait.

Along with the release date announcement in March, HBO also released a pair of trailers for the upcoming sophomore season, playing up the rising tensions between the factions. In a brilliant marketing move, HBO produced a Green trailer for Alicent Hightower's (Olivia Cooke) Greens, and a Black trailer for Rhaenyra Targaryen's (Emma D'Arcy) Blacks. With footage of deadly battles looming on the horizon, the trailers beckon the viewer to choose their side for House of the Dragon season 2.

The Black trailer:

With the second season of House of the Dragon shaping up to be an epic clash of factions, HBO has released another trailer to get fans excited for the sophomore outing. Like previous trailers, the impending Targaryan civil war takes center stage as the Blacks and Greens take up their respective tactical positions. Also, among various scenes of war and violence, a small snippet is shown that takes place at The Wall. This small tease hints at the return of House Starke and opens the door for other interesting royal family dynamics.
