Pepsi ran a contest in the Philippines 1992 that tragically resulted in the deaths of five people.
The contest, called Number Fever, had a simple premise: everyday, the news would announce a winning number. If your Pepsi bottle cap had that number, you won a million pesos. Pepsi had a system in place to ensure only two winners each evening. However, on May 25, 1992, a critical error occurred. Hundreds of thousands of Filipinos "won" that evening. Pepsi suddenly faced the expectation of paying tens of billions of dollars in prize money. A tragedy they never foresaw.
