Insulin-dependent diabetes, also known as type 1 diabetes, is a chronic autoimmune disease. This means the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, in this case, the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

Here's how it comes about:
The pancreas is responsible for producing insulin, a hormone that acts like a key, unlocking the door for glucose (sugar) to enter your cells and be used for energy.
With type 1 diabetes, the immune system destroys the beta cells, leaving the body with little or no insulin production.
Without enough insulin, glucose builds up in the bloodstream instead of being absorbed by the cells.

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes can develop quickly and may include:
Excessive thirst and urination
Increased hunger
Unintended weight loss
Fatigue and lack of energy
Blurred vision
Slow-healing wounds
Frequent infections
