Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi has been killed in ahelicopter crash, state media has confirmed.

The helicopter reportedly got into difficulties in heavyfog in the north of the country on Sunday beforecrashing; killing the president, Foreign MinisterHossein Amir-Abdollahian, and several others.

Raisi, a hardline cleric close to Iran's Supreme Leader,Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was heading to the city ofTabriz, in the north-west of the country, after returningfrom a dam opening ceremony.

An election for a new president is now set to take place in the next 50 days.
