🚸 MODERN SLAVERY
Imagine an entire population unable to survive without scrounging one or two dollars a day in dangerous conditions. There is no alternative. The mines have taken over. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced as their villages have been bulldozed to make way for large mining concessions.

So you have people with no alternative, no other source of income, no livelihood. Add to that the threat of armed forces, which in many cases force people to dig, forcing parents to make the painful choice of 'do I send my child to school or do we eat today? And if they choose the latter, that means taking all their children into these toxic pits to dig, just to earn that extra fifty cents or a dollar a day, which could mean the difference between eating or not eating. So in the 21st century, this is modern slavery.

Cobalt is used in the manufacture of almost all lithium-ion batteries in use around the world today. The cost to the people and environment of one of the most oppressed and impoverished corners of the world, the bottom of the supply chain where almost all the world's cobalt comes from, is a horror show.
