THE YOUNG WIFE Trailer (2024) Kiersey Clemons
© 2024 - Paramount
"Will you love him like we love him?" "Will you actually make time for us?" Republic Pictures / Paramount Movies has revealed the trailer for an indie film titled The Young Wife, the second feature film made by filmmaker Tayarisha Poe, after Selah and the Spades from Sundance 2019. This new one premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival last year, and it will finally be out on VOD at the end of this month to watch. On her wedding day, all that stands between a young woman named Celestina and marital bliss with her soon-to-be husband (played by the singer / songwriter Leon Bridges) is surviving the chaos and expectations of family and friends, each intensifying her spiraling panic. It's a story about marriage and all that comes with it, good and bad. Starring Kiersey Clemons as Celestina, with Kelly Marie Tran & Michaela Watkins. Reviews are mixed, though they do say that "The Young Wife can be a chaotic experience, but Poe has the skills to carry us through the noise and toward the future." If you're curious about this anyway, have a look.
Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Tayarisha Poe's film The Young Wife, direct from YouTube:
The Young Wife Poster
The story of a young woman named Celestina (Kiersey Clemons) grappling with the meaning of love in the face of an uncertain world, The Young Wife is a sunny day panic attack and a wholly new take on the wedding film following her over the course of her "non-wedding" day. All that stands between this young woman and marital bliss with her soon-to-be husband is surviving the chaos & expectations of family & friends, each intensifying her spiraling panic. The Young Wife is written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Tayarisha Poe, making her second feature film after directing Selah and the Spades previously, as well as a few other shorts and series. Produced by Anne Carey and Tayarisha Poe. This initially premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival last year, but it didn't show anywhere else. Republic Pictures will debut Poe's The Young Wife direct-to-VOD to watch starting May 31st, 2024 this summer. Anyone interested?
Is anyone really ready to get married, let alone commit?
Tayarisha Poe’s new film, “The Young Wife,” asks and answers the age-old question and more, with Kiersey Clemons starring as a young woman whose “non-wedding” to her elusive partner (Leon Bridges) brings out all the pressures of a traditional union. The chaos and expectations of family and friends heighten the not-quite-bride’s spiraling panic, and all seems poised to unravel just before the party meant to celebrate their love.
Sheryl Lee Ralph, Judith Light, Kelly Marie Tran, Aya Cash, and Michaela Watkins co-star. Poe writes and directs her follow-up to 2019 Sundance debut “Selah and the Spades.”

“The Young Wife” premiered at SXSW 2023, where it was picked up by distributor Republic Pictures, a Paramount Pictures label. “I’m excited to share the work of our wonderful cast and crew,” Poe told IndieWire. “For me this is a story of color and chaos, tension and release — an antidote to a plague of loneliness, a tonic for being alive. so, simply put, it’s a wedding.”
Poe began writing the film in 2019 but after the pandemic hit, reoriented the feature to be set in the future since traditional weddings began to be virtual experiences. The production design by Rocio Gimenez and costumes by Laura Cristina Ortiz emphasize the slight futuristic feel of the feature.
In his review out of the festival, IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio wrote that the feature “evokes the beginning of Lars von Trier’s ‘Melancholia,’ a movie whose first half appears to have influenced Poe here as another bustling wedding day where a bride (or in “The Young Wife”s’ case a bride-adjacent) has a breakdown amid a cascading series of crises. Set 10 years in the future and imbued with an ineffably otherworldly glow that almost makes you feel like you’ve been planted on another planet, ‘The Young Wife’ is a heady soup of a wedding day ensemble dramedy, and one with plenty of spiky characters and admirable visuals to pluck from.”
Lattanzio especially applauded lead actress Clemons’ performance as being “a ray of warmth and wonder, a clear center of gravity amid a constantly shuffling ensemble of people” of the feature.
“The Young Wife” premieres on digital on Friday, May 31. Check out the film’s trailer below.
Zach Braff and Vanessa Hudgens have a certain je ne sais quoi in their new movie.
French Girl stars the two actors in a tricky love triangle with costar Evelyne Brochu in the titular role. PEOPLE has the exclusive first trailer for the “heartwarming romantic comedy,” per an official synopsis.
Braff, 48, plays Gordon, a “hopeless romantic” who “finds his proposal plans are thrown into chaos when his girlfriend Sophie is swept away to Quebec by a job offer.”
But it’s not just any job offer, as the trailer soon reveals. The “sophisticated celebrity chef” offering employment is the headstrong Ruby, played by Hudgens, who also happens to be a former flame of Gordon’s girlfriend.

“Determined to keep their love alive, Gordon leaves Brooklyn for her hometown, only to find himself hilariously out of his depth in attempting to charm her hard-to-impress, French-speaking family,” adds the synopsis.

The trailer offers glimpses of Gordon’s attempt to assimilate into the customs of Québec City, Canada, and his would-be in-laws. He’s also clearly threatened by Ruby, who can be seen hosting soirées, hunting game and, at one point, belting graveside at a funeral.

Playing Braff’s onscreen father is William Fichtner, egging him on to put a ring on it. “Pop the question before she switches teams again!” he advises upon learning of Sophie’s former girlfriend.
Written and directed by filmmaking duo James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright, French Girl also stars Luc Picard, Antoine Olivier Pilon, Isabelle Vincent, Charlotte Aubin and Muriel Dutil.

Zach Braff Addresses Criticism of 'Garden State' Almost 20 Years After Its Release
In a joint statement to PEOPLE, Woods and Wright say the film “is our love letter to the place we were born and raised, the beautiful Canadian province of Quebec."
When the filmmaking team met, they add, “we were amazed by the similarities of our parents’ stories; English men who fell head over heels with French Canadian women and moved to La Belle Province to start their families. We were inspired to frame that story as a throwback romantic comedy that would celebrate the culture clash" between the U.S. and Canada.

“Quebec City, the province’s picturesque capital, became the perfect setting for our love story; enchanting landscapes, rich history, delicious food and more importantly, a wonderful people that revere family and tradition. This backdrop, coupled with the fast paced, ego-driven culinary world, infuses French Girl with the energy of a modern-day fairy tale.”
Following its premiere at the 2024 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, French Girl is in theaters March 15.
Paramount+ provides a range of original series, like Yellowstone, and family-friendly content, with new episodes being added regularly, making it a mix of old and new.
Classic horror like The Hellraiser movies and modern series like Evil join Paramount+ this month.
Underrated rom-coms like What's Your Number and modern classics like Boogie Nights get the chance to find a new audience on streaming.
Paramount+ has plenty of new TV shows and movies coming in April 2024, including docuseries and family favorites. Paramount+ launched in March 2021 as a rebranding of the CBS All Access streaming platform, with the goal of expanding its offerings and reach. Thanks to the re-merger between CBS and Viacom in 2019, Paramount+ also has access to Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and MTV libraries. That usually means that library content is more exciting for subscribers than new content because they can binge existing series.
Unlike some of its competitors, Paramount+ has not put an emphasis on original movie programming except in the case of children’s films. However, the streaming service does have a popular lineup of exclusive original series, including the multiple-timeline and decade-spanning Yellowstone franchise. In April 2024, however, the big gains for Paramount+ were the additions of the final season of Star Trek: Discovery and the new Sonic spin-off series Knuckles. Those were two of the most-watched shows for the platform around the world. May 2024 sees more new content for Paramount+.
For more on the movies and TV shows coming to other streaming platforms, check out what's new on Netflix and new on Disney+.

Paramount+ has come a long way from its humble beginnings as CBS All Access - as the stellar lineup of the 30 best shows on Paramount+ proves.
The Best Movies And Shows Coming To Paramount+ This Month
Annihilation (2018) - May 1
Annihilation wasn’t a huge hit with audiences when it landed in theaters, but critics found it fascinating and thought-provoking. The sci-fi journey crossed genres to demonstrate a story of loss, acceptance, and even horror. Featuring a primarily female cast, the movie was anchored by the huge talents of Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
The movie follows a group made of scientists and soldiers who travel through a mysterious “shimmer” into a pocket of the world where the rules of nature as they’ve been established simply do not apply. With some gorgeous visual effects and a harrowing journey, the movie really does keep the audience invested in just what is going on. Annihilation leaves more questions than answers, but that’s part of what makes the movie so good.
Boogie Nights (1997) - May 1
It’s rare for a movie centered on the world of adult films to be a widespread hit with audiences and critics, but that’s exactly what happened with Boogie Nights. The drama is considered a modern-day classic.
The story follows a producer who wants to make his adult films more than seedy videos sold at the back of a store. He wants to turn his projects into art, and thinks he’s found a way to do that with a promising young star. Unfortunately, fame and ego mean that a rise to the top of the industry is also accompanied by a fall. The movie saw Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, and Mark Wahlberg nominated for several awards when it premiered. Reynolds won a Golden Globe for his role.
Crawl (2019) - May 1
Creature features are usually seen as cheesy horror movies... that's not the case with Crawl.
Creature features are usually seen as cheesy horror movies. Audiences might enjoy them, but they aren’t always well-crafted movies, and they tend to get a reputation as being lesser projects compared to other horror. That’s not the case with Crawl. Crawl got a nomination from the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards and the Hollywood Critics Association for Best Wide Release and Best Horror of the Year, respectively.
The movie sees former Skins star Kaya Scodelario as a young woman searching for her father during a Category 5 hurricane in Florida. Unfortunately, her attempt to save her father gets interrupted when she’s trapped in a house with rising floodwaters and alligators. With earnest performances and actors who appear to be up for anything, the movie is both a fun and emotional ride.
Hellraiser Movies (1992-2005) - May 1
When it comes to horror movie franchises, it’s true that most fans will develop a fondness for the first movie in a franchise and believe that the quality dips with each successive sequel, prequel, remake, or reboot. That can be true, and it’s certainly true that not all of the Hellraiser movies are on equal footing, but the great thing about this collection being added to Paramount+ is that it’s nearly complete.
The first two movies and the 2022 reboot are not available on Paramount+, but most of the movies in between them are. That means fans who have only seen the new movie, or only seen the first movie, can get a better picture of the lore of the Hellraiser franchise with the six movies available to binge here.
Hellraiser and Hellraiser II are both available to stream on multiple platforms, like Shudder, Tubi, and PlutoTV.
Rocketman (2019) - May 1
Rocketman is very loosely based on the journey of Elton John’s music career. Upon initial release, some critics disliked that the movie doesn’t play by strict biopic rules, but it is a musical fantasy instead. The movie tells Elton John’s story with embellishments, high-flying musical performances, and a whole lot of heart.
The music, acting, and costumes are a highlight of the movie, providing for a very entertaining package. Taron Egerton found himself nominated for a slew of awards after the movie’s release and he won a Golden Globe for his work. Elton John also won a Golden Globe and Academy Award for the new song he penned for the movie alongside Bernie Taupin, “I’m Gonna Love Me Again.”
What’s Your Number (2011) - May 1
What’s Your Number brings up the double standards for dating
What’s Your Number is one of the most underrated R-rated rom-coms of the 21st century. It frequently gets glossed over in rom-com discussions in favor of PG-13 movies because that lower rating can appeal to a wider audience. The movie boasts a stellar comedic cast led by Anna Faris and Chris Evans though and deserves to be seen by as many rom-com fans as possible.
In the movie, Farris is a single woman who reads a magazine article about women finding “the one” before sleeping with a certain number of people. She becomes convinced she’s already met the love of her life and let them get away because her number is higher than what’s considered normal. Evans is her neighbor who helps her locate all the men she’s been with in exchange for using her apartment to escape his one-night stands. What’s Your Number brings up the double standards for dating among men and women and aims to create a sex-positive story.
Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Anthony Mackie, and Martin Freeman all appeared in What’s Your Number and went on to play major characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Evil (2019) - May 23
Originally airing on CBS, Evil was moved to Paramount+ when ratings for the show declined. It’s worked much better on streaming where the show isn’t as confined by TV standards and audiences are able to watch the series at their own pace.
The series follows an eclectic group from very different backgrounds as they investigate claims of supernatural occurrences reported to the Catholic church. While the show is primarily a drama, it has elements of mystery and even crime procedurals as well as horror, allowing different episodes to cross genre lines in service of whatever story is being told for that week’s hour. Starring Mike Colter, Aasif Mandvi, and and Katja Herbers, the series makes for a fascinating, but sometimes dark, watch.
Season 4 is the final season of Evil.
Additional content is available to those Paramount+ subscribers who have the Showtime add-on as well. Television shows from Paramount-owned networks continue airing new episodes in May. Once they do, new episodes of the shows will also be available to stream on Paramount+ the day after they air, making May 2024 an even busier month than April for the streamer. Paramount also adds live sporting and news coverage regularly. The content available depends on the playing schedules.
