St. Louis, Missouri — On Friday, May 28, 2021, St. Louis Metropolitan police officers were trying to pull over 32-year-old Darne Ricks, on Pennsylvania Avenue near Cherokee Street, in relation to an armed robbery investigation. Ricks drove erratically through streets where children were present as he escaped at more than 100 mph. The vehicle eventually crashed in the 3700 block of Nebraska. Ricks came to a stop on Nebraska Avenue. He stepped out of the car and fired at the officers who were pursuing him. An officer leapt out of his truck and returned fire. As Ricks ran away, the officer fired four shots before lowering his arms briefly, running, and firing eight more times.
Ricks was apprehended by police in a nearby alley following a brief foot chase. One of the officers was taken to the hospital with a graze wound above his right eye. It was not immediately clear if the wound was from shattered glass or the result of a bullet. The Officer was released later that day. Ricks was not injured in the altercation. A weapon was recovered at the scene. On March 28, 2023, Ricks pleaded guilty to firing at police officers in 2021, calling a halt to his circuit court trial on the second day of the proceeding. He was then sentenced to 21 years in prison. In addition, Ricks received a 10-year term for his involvement in a robbery that happened three days prior to the shootout with police.
