Ada James' life in the quaint streets of twentieth-century Bristol painted a picture of modest contentment. Born into a working-class family, Ada was known for her radiant smile and friendly nature. Her life seemed unremarkable, yet she was very content.

She had a relationship with a furniture maker named Edward Henry Palmer, a charming and attentive man, who, as she would soon discover, harbored a controlling and volatile temperament. You see, Edward, also known as Ted, had a dark past as a petty thief, which he was jailed for in 1912. Upon release, he moved to Canada and wrote to Ada how they’d resume their love affair once he got back. In December that year, Ted did come back and proposed marriage.

As their engagement unfolded, the initial spark of romance subtly, yet steadily, dimmed. The once jolly and spirited young woman, whose laughter could light up a room, seemed to retreat into a shadow of her former self. Whispers of Edward's overbearing nature began to circulate among their circle.

In January of the following year, Ted paid a visit to Ada’s father’s house and took Ada out for a walk at around seven PM. During their stroll, Palmer, freshly back from his travels, shared his intentions to journey to the West Indies, hoping to better his prospects. Ada reportedly disagreed, begging her fiance to stay with her. This then started a heated argument.

The fight raged on until Ada, filled with frustration that has been brewing over the past months, threw her engagement ring at Ted. She also threatened to tell everyone they knew that he was leaving her again in order to humiliate him. Edward did not take this all kindly. He retaliated, saying how when he’s gone, she was going to have fun in town again — alluding to her having intimate relations with other men. Palmer then claimed that two sailors had bragged to him about sleeping with Ada while he was in Canada. Ada apparently did not deny the allegations, because it was at this moment that all hell broke loose.
