Ian Thor Green, a pseudonym masking the true identity of William Chandler Shrubsall, harbored a complex and troubled past. Shrubsall’s story began in Niagara Falls, New York, his life marked by tragedy and turmoil from an early age. The untimely death of his mother under suspicious circumstances entangled him in a web of legal and emotional battles that would shape his dark trajectory.

So who took the life of William's mother? Well, it was William. At the age of seventeen, he was convicted of manslaughter for fatally beating his mother with a baseball bat, an act he claimed was self-defense against her alleged abuse. This event marked the onset of a long legal battle, with Shrubsall facing the juvenile justice system and later, an adult prison. Shrubsall's defense centered around his claims of enduring years of physical and psychological abuse from his mother.

This narrative, true or fabricated, painted a picture of a deeply troubled youth. What followed was a string of crimes in New York. In an attempt to escape, Shrubsall disappeared and wrote a suicide note indicating he jumped into the Niagra Falls, when he really moved to Canada.

Upon arriving at Halifax, Shrubsall sought to reinvent himself to escape the demons of his past. As he was able to slowly establish himself, he rented a room at a fraternity house and faked a student status. He mingled with students and embedded himself in the academic community. Shrubsall's facade began to crumble as his predatory nature emerged. Targeting the unsuspecting, his first crimes were a series of thefts, swiftly escalating to more sinister acts.
