Introduction to Constellations

A constellation is an area on the celestial sphere in which a group of visible stars forms a perceived outline or pattern, which has then been given a name. In the days when people could neither read or write, and thus there were no books to learn from, maps to use for navigation, and few paths to follow, the sky was used as a blackboard, and constellations were used as a means of teaching lessons and navigation. The origins of the earliest constellations go back to prehistory. Different cultures and countries adopted their own constellations, some of which even lasted into the early 20th century.

Constellations have changed significantly over time. Many changed in size or shape. Some became popular, only to drop into obscurity. Some were limited to a single culture or nation. Now, they are all internationally recognized, named by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and cover the entire celestial sphere. But knowing the older constellations helps us understand the archaelogical meaning of many ancient structures and helps date ancient structures. In this video we provide the link between just some of the numerous constellations that fill the night sky and their mystic symbolic meaning, using Ptolemy's writings for example the Almagest, and Aratus's Phaenomena. PTOLEMY’S CONSTELLATIONS
