The Symbolism of Sagittarius, Bows and Arrows

Sagittarius is a Sign of the Zodiac. It is the constellation of the bow, arrow and archer, Sagire, means to 'seek to know'. Sagittarius is thus a seeker after truth. Sagittarius traditionally ‘rules’ the 9th House of the zodiac, and this is ‘the house of the higher mind’. The Archer's arrow does have a place symbolically, as it indicates that the archetype is a very quick thinker – direct and to the point, logical and rational. The boundaries and naming of this constellation was neither common or constant, so we probably need to concentrate on the archetype, rather than its changing patterns. And one thing becomes extremely clear when one looks at its glyph, its history and its meaning. Its current depiction as a centaur is wrong. The general character of Centaurs is that of wild and lawless beings, the slaves of their animal passions. A Sagittarian as an archetype is almost the direct opposite. The confusion may have arisen as Chiron was a centaur. But he has his own constellation - Centaurus. But in Krotos we might have found the original for the Sagittarian archetype and through his association with the Muses, may have found a way of attaining the spiritual experience this archetype best describes – wisdom
