The Symbolism of MARS and the colour Red

Astrologically, Mars is associated with "aggression, confrontation, energy, strength, ambition and impulsiveness". It is said to "govern sports, competitions and physical activities in general". Mars is also associated symbolically with Red - a distinct deep blood red colour. But Mars was second in importance only to Jupiter and Saturn to the Romans. Why?
