The Dove is a symbol of Love and especially faithful and devoted love. In Roman mythology, for example, the turtle dove was one of the emblems of Fides, the goddess of trust and good faith. Columba is a faint though small constellation. It was originally named Columba Noachi ("Noah's Dove"), referring to the dove that gave Noah the information that the Great Flood was receding. Although the symbolism of The Dove has remained constant, the symbolism has been somewhat ruthlessly exploited by a number of ancient goddesses more traditionally associated with sensuality and sex - even war - not faithful and devoted love. Inanna, Ishtar, Sauska, the Greek Aphrodite, and Venus all used the symbol to attempt to give the impression their love was a dove's love and had nothing to do with sex and power. But the Roman goddess Venus was partnered with Mars, and Mars was principally the god of war and conflict. Gradually over time the dove was looked on as a sacrifice. Faithful and devoted love must be sacrificed in the name of sex, advance and power. But the symbolism of the dove stayed constant. It represented faithful or devoted love - not sensual love or love involving "erotic passion" and indeed it is only faith and devoted love that bring you "safe passage".
