Failure 2 Kombat
Sequels are a tricky beast to tame. Oftentimes, they fall victim to the crushing weight of expectations, leaving audiences disappointed and filmmakers scratching their heads. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is a prime example of a sequel gone awry. Released in 1997, just two years after the surprisingly enjoyable original Mortal Kombat film, this sequel attempted to capitalize on the success of its predecessor. However, instead of building upon the foundation laid by the first film, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation crumbles under the weight of its own hubris.
Let's talk about the plot, or lack thereof, in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. The film picks up right where the first one left off, with our heroes Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Johnny Cage facing off against the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung. However, when the sinister Outworld emperor Shao Kahn invades Earthrealm, chaos ensues. The story quickly spirals into a nonsensical mess of subplots, inconsistent character motivations, and baffling decisions that leave viewers scratching their heads.
One of the biggest sins of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is its complete disregard for the source material. Fans of the iconic video game franchise will be left fuming as beloved characters are butchered beyond recognition. From the laughable portrayal of the shape-shifting reptilian ninja Reptile to the cringe-inducing dialogue spouted by the thunder god Raiden, this film takes everything that made the Mortal Kombat games great and throws it out the window.
Now, let's talk about the special effects, or lack thereof, in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. As a film released in 1997, one would expect at least a modicum of decent CGI. However, what we get in this abomination of a movie is a hot mess of poorly rendered creatures, laughable fight sequences, and green screen effects that look like they were lifted straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon.
The iconic characters of the Mortal Kombat universe, such as Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and the fan-favorite Kitana, are reduced to mere shadows of their video game counterparts. So, should you watch Mortal Kombat: Annihilation? Only if you have a high tolerance for pain and a strong stomach for cinematic atrocities. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and steer clear of this trainwreck of a movie. Stick to the video games and the original Mortal Kombat film if you want to experience the true essence of the franchise. And remember, sometimes the best sequels are the ones that never get made.
Thank you for joining me on this journey through the wreckage of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Until next time, stay safe, stay entertained, and avoid bad sequels at all costs.
Until Next Time, your souls belong are mine !
