Parrots are interesting birds that are popular among people who enjoy having birds as pets. There are a variety of species of parrot in the world with a few considered adoptable like blue-and-yellow macaws. The bird that we see in this video is, we believe, a scarlet macaw, which is one of the species of parrots that are not allowed to be traded commercially. While not bird experts we are taking a guess here at the type of parrot that you can see in this video.

Did you know that a macaw’s facial feather pattern is unique to each individual bird. They are somewhat like the fingerprints on a human. Scarlet macaws are red, yellow and blue. They are native to South America with a range of habitat that extends from Mexico to Colombia, Bolivia, and Brazil. We found out that the Scarlet Macaw is the national bird of Honduras. There are many scarlets in captivity, but recent acts and the U.S. Endangered Species list has led to more protections for these birds. Many breeders these days breed hybrid birds to get around that.

Scarlet macaws are known to be quite curious and birds in captivity are known to mimic human speech. In the wild they communicate mostly with loud honks, but they do have a large range of sounds that they can make or mimic. We are curious as to what made this bird think that landing on the woman would be a good choice. Maybe he thought she had some seeds for him to snack on. Scarlet Macaws like to eat seeds, fruit, and nuts. Fortunately, it is good the woman didn’t have snacks. It’s best not to feed wild animals.
