The trial of a former economy minister, Kuandyk Bishimbayev, has gripped Kazakhstan, sparking conversations about domestic abuse. A brutal CCTV footage, played in the court, shows him dragging his wife, Saltanat Nukenova, and then punching and kicking her in a restaurant owned by one of his relatives last November. The trial has created a massive uproar in Kazakhstan, where about 400 women die from domestic abuse every year, according to the United Nations.
