Darth Vader’s relationship with his troops in the Star Wars universe is complex. While he is known for his ruthless and intimidating demeanor, there are instances where he has shown a form of respect towards his subordinates, especially those who are competent and loyal. For example, Vader’s guard, a unit of death troopers, was led by Sergeant Cordo and later by Vader himself. These elite soldiers were tasked with special missions and were known for their rigorous training and loyalty to the Empire1.

In the broader context of the Galactic Empire, stormtroopers and other military units were expected to be unquestionably loyal and effective in combat. The training of these troops was grueling, and there were rumors that their brains were altered to make them less empathetic and more tactically minded2. This indicates that while Vader may have had a functional relationship with his troops, the overall treatment of Imperial soldiers was harsh and aimed at creating effective soldiers rather than ensuring their well-being.

It’s important to note that the Star Wars narrative often portrays Vader as a figure who demands the utmost discipline and performance, and he does not hesitate to punish failure. However, within the expanded universe and various storylines, there are moments that suggest he can acknowledge and reward competence, which could be interpreted as a form of ‘good’ treatment within the strict and authoritarian structure of the Empire.
