While Hitler believed the workers had been excluded from national life and used as "stage extras", he also asserted that the Social Democrats were ineffective, "exhausting themselves in being right", and failing to connect with the people. He believed that the masses were capable of both good and evil, and it was the duty of National Socialism to cultivate what was "best" in them.
