The symbolism of Eagle, double-headed eagles and the Constellation Aquila

The word Eagle describes any bird of prey able to hunt large vertebrates. The symbolism appears to be straightforward. The Greeks chose to use the symbol of an eagle in the story of Prometheus. But all is not as it seems even in this apparently simple story. And what about the double headed eagle? In this video we explain how the advance of the Mongol Empire and the "Golden Horde" spurred Ivan III Vasilyevich (1440 - 1505) and his wife Sofia Paleologue into promoting the idea of Moscow as the true successor to Rome, with the double headed Eagle, the Symbol of Orthodoxy, as its symbol.
