In 2012, Universal Pictures said that Marc Platt will produce the adaptation. Following an extensive development period marked by several setbacks as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chu was appointed director in 2021, with Erivo and Grande cast in their appropriate parts. The main photography started in December 2022 in England and ended in January 2024. It was interrupted in July 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
